Ugly Americans is
Comedy Central's latest original cartoon. Its premise is interesting: in an alternate version of New York, every fantasy and horror genre-related creature is an immigrant. It's like they put every movie and novel ever into a blender with New York and the
Immigration Crisis and this is the show that emerged. It all stemmed from
5ON, a webseries written by excellent comedians like
John Mulaney and
Nick Kroll.
The writing is so good, you can't even begin to argue that it didn't whoop
South Park's ass this season. (Aside from the
200th episode, but even then, the
two episodes after it were giant letdowns.) They finally found a show worthy of the nasty 10:30 timeslot (
Secret Girlfriend's shit was likely still lying around the place when they arrived) and we may even have the show that eventually replaces South Park if we're lucky.
The best part of this show for me isn't the likeable main character, Mark, or his zombie roommate, Randall, or the hot half-demon Callie... it's Leonard, the alcoholic wizard.
When people talk about the
funniest characters on television right now, Leonard's right up there. (He's much better than any
Tracy Morgan character, to say the least.) His one-liners and flippant nature steal the show most of the time. Most episodes, I find myself wanting more Leonard. Which is why I need more Ugly Americans.
